Homemade flaxseed pancakes for brunch today🥞. . . Flaxseed is rich in ALA, lignans, and fiber. ALA, or alpha-linolenic acid, is one of the Omega 3’s, which are healthy fats necessary for brain function and cardiovascular health. Lignans are phytoestrogens and have anti-oxidative properties, meaning they mimic oestrogen in the body, relieving menopausal symptoms and reducing inflammation/promoting tissue recovery. And we all know the benefits of adding fiber to our diets! Fiber is incredibly important for proper digestion and aids in regulating blood sugar in people with Type 2 Diabetes and pre-diabetes. Flaxseed also has a low glycemic index, meaning it has a slower absorption rate. When turned into flax meal, it can be a great alternative for wheat and corn flours for diabetic individuals. . . Note: Because of it’s hard outer shell, flaxseed must be ground in order to receive its benefits! Otherwise, eating whole flaxseed will only provide insoluble fiber. And there’s nothing wrong with that if you’re trying to move things along😉. . . After a failed attempt using a pestle & mortar, I used an old coffee grinder to make my ground flaxseed. I added about 2 Tablespoons to a homemade pancake recipe and saved the left overs for later. Bloating sucks!! . Ever since my explant surgery in April I have been on the struggle bus with my digestion because the antibiotics I had to take wiped out my system. We all get bloated, backed up, gassy and miserable every now and then so today Im sharing my tips for helping beat the bloat! These are the things that I do to feel and look my best! . 1️⃣ increase your water intake Sometimes we simply need to drink more water! Fill up your water bottle and carry it with you everywhere. 2️⃣chew your food well Digestion starts in your brain, at the thought of food and continues in the mouth when you chew your food and begin breaking it down with your saliva and teeth! So chew chew chew. 3️⃣eat light to heavy I’ve been practicing this for years! It really helps me to start my day with hot water with lemon then I like to have a green smoothie or green juice. Break that fast! 4️⃣incorporate both raw and cooked I was a raw vegan for three years in my twenties and I learned so much about vegan nutrition and health benefits of different fruits and veggies during that time. I also learned that steamed veggies are easier to digest than a plate of raw veggies and my body feels best when I include both into my diet. 5️⃣ sip on hot water throughout the day This practice helps digestion and gently pushes gas that causes bloating through your system. 6️⃣ take a probiotics/prebiotic supplement Not only will this improve digestion and decrease boating but it will also help heal your gut and increase healthy gut flora! That helps your overall health not just bloating! I get mine in my superfood smoothie daily! 7️⃣ eat foods that aid in digestion Papaya & pineapple are two of my favorites! DigestZen is my go-to blend for any type of digestive issues (gas, bloating, nausea, etc.). Should you run out, though (heaven forbid!!!), here's a great substitution that works just as well... Combine 10 drops each of Wild Orange, Cardamom and Fennel (Star Anise works, too!) in a 10 mL roller bottle; top off with fractionated coconut oil. Apply to stomach as often as needed.
