Nong Shain Maw: Stone Breakers of the East Khasi Highlands (Medium Format Film Series) The Khasi are an Indigenous people who live in the north-east Indian state of Meghalaya. A marginalised people, they support themselves by breaking rock by hand for shipment to Bangladesh. The women and children who undertake this work are known in Khasi language as 'nongshainmaw', meaning 'the people who break the rock'. The men who work at the quarry are called 'nongtimaw', meaning 'the people who dig the rock'. For this back-breaking work - 12 hours a day, 6 days a week - they are paid around $2 per day. A matrilineal society, the Khasi maintain their unique language and culture, and harbour separatist ambitions. This photo series is in recognition of International Day of the World's Indigenous Peoples (August 9). India's population includes over 100 million Indigenous peoples from over 700 ethnic groups. Internationally, there over 370 million Indigenous peoples worldwide, yet despite making up only 5% of the world's population, make up around 15% of the poorest. Since these photos were taken, the quarries have been shut down. No further investment has been made and the Khasi remain struggling for their recognition and independence.
